Why it sticks in spring and fall
Two things happen at once. Moisture swells the jamb and the slab edge, and seasonal ground movement takes the frame slightly out of square. The latch no longer lines up with the strike and the top corner drags. Fix is hinge re-anchoring, strike realignment and sealing the jamb — an hour of work, not a new door.
Multipoint locks that stopped throwing
Fiberglass and steel entry systems use a gearbox that drives bolts at the top and bottom of the slab. When lifting the handle goes slack, the gearbox has stripped. It's a replaceable part — you don't need a new door, but the gearbox has to match the backset, spindle and rod spacing, so we identify it on site.
When replacement is the honest answer
A slab cracked through, delaminated at the skin, or warped enough that it only seals in one corner will not come back with adjustment. Same for a frame rotted its full height. Those get quoted as a complete entry system so the new slab, frame and threshold work together.
Questions we get asked
- My door won't latch unless I pull it hard. What is that?
- The latch is missing the strike, usually by two or three millimetres. Cause is a dropped hinge or a frame that moved. Adjusting the hinges and repositioning the strike fixes it properly; enlarging the strike hole just hides it for a season.
- Can you repair a fiberglass door, or do those get replaced?
- Repaired. Hardware, gearboxes, hinges, weatherstrip, thresholds and glass inserts are all serviceable on fiberglass. Only skin delamination or a cracked-through slab forces a replacement.
- I feel a draft at the bottom of the door.
- That's the sweep, the threshold, or both. A door sweep is a same-visit part. An adjustable threshold can often be raised back into contact instead of replaced.
